Keeping up with UK refrigeration laws is essential for legal compliance and environmental protection. Here’s a straightforward breakdown of what businesses need to know.
1. F-Gas Regulations
Since Brexit, the UK retained the EU’s F-Gas regulations. These rules aim to reduce the use of fluorinated gases, which are powerful greenhouse contributors. Leak checks, proper record-keeping, and certified handling are all mandatory.
2. GWP Limits & Gas Bans
As of 2020, any refrigerant with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) over 2,500 is banned for servicing systems with more than 40 tonnes CO₂ equivalent. This encourages a shift to greener alternatives like R-744 and R-290.
3. Mandatory Leak Checks
Depending on the amount of gas in your system, you may need annual, biannual, or even quarterly checks. Businesses must maintain logs and ensure trained engineers carry out inspections.
4. TM44 Air Conditioning Inspections
All air conditioning systems over 12kW must undergo TM44 inspections every 5 years. These check energy performance and help improve system efficiency. Reports must be kept onsite.
5. PSSR & Safety Standards
Systems that use pressure vessels—like compressors—must comply with the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 (PSSR). This includes written schemes of examination and clear user instructions.
