Natural Refrigerants
Ammonia, CO₂ and propane — future-proof cooling with zero and ultra-low GWP.
EJM has pioneered natural refrigerant technology for over four decades. As F-Gas regulations tighten, ammonia, CO₂ and propane are becoming the refrigerants of choice for industrial and commercial applications.
Ammonia (R717)
Zero rated for both Ozone Depletion Potential and Global Warming Potential. Ammonia has always been our natural refrigerant of choice for industrial systems — two-stage plants, pumped ammonia with hot gas defrost, and low pressure receiver systems.
CO₂ Transcritical
Our recent projects include multiple transcritical CO₂ refrigeration packs for frozen and chilled storage, adiabatic gas coolers, DX CO₂ evaporators and propane-based glycol secondary circuits — as delivered at Cube Cold Theale.
Propane (R290)
Propane is a high-efficiency hydrocarbon refrigerant with ultra-low GWP. We use propane in commercial packs and as part of secondary glycol circuits where it delivers excellent performance with a strong environmental profile.
Heat recovery
Modern systems capture waste heat for facility heating, reducing both emissions and operating costs. EJM integrates heat recovery and heat pump technology into complete refrigeration packages.
Refrigerant comparison
| Refrigerant | GWP | Best for | EJM experience |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ammonia (R717) | 0 | Large industrial plants | 46+ years |
| CO₂ transcritical | 1 | DCs, retail, food | Multiple UK projects |
| Propane (R290) | 3 | Commercial packs & secondary circuits | UK projects including Cube Cold |
| Low-GWP HFO/HFC | Low | Commercial systems | Full portfolio |
Zero GWP
Ammonia is zero rated for global warming potential — the natural choice for industrial scale.
