EJM Engineered Systems Ltd recently completed the refrigeration installation for a major temperature-controlled distribution centre in Warrington, supporting both chilled and frozen storage operations within a national cold-chain logistics network.

Project Details:

The project involved the complete refrigeration design and installation for a new regional distribution centre in Warrington.

The system was designed to provide high-performance cooling, excellent reliability and reduced environmental impact through the use of natural refrigerant technology.

SERVICES PERFORMED BY EJM:
Industrial Refrigeration Design, Installation, Commissioning, Electrical Services, Controls Integration & Mechanical Installation.

Key Refrigeration Features

  • Two-stage ammonia refrigeration system with glycol secondary circuit
  • GEA Grasso compressor packages with advanced Omni controls
  • Coolers & Condensers evaporators serving freezer and chill stores
  • BAC evaporative condenser complete with water treatment system
  • Glycol pump skids, surge drums and oil recovery systems
  • RDM controls and monitoring integration
  • Electrical installation including MCC panels
  • Dehumidification systems serving 35 loading docks

So, what was our solution?

Installation

EJM delivered the full refrigeration package including plant installation, refrigerant pipework, electrical infrastructure, control systems and commissioning.

Key Capital Plant Included:

Ammonia refrigeration plant, evaporative condensers, glycol systems, compressor packages, MCC panels, RDM controls, dehumidification systems, air conditioning and associated mechanical and electrical infrastructure.

Frozen Store:

The frozen storage areas were designed to operate at -22°C with a total freezer duty of 1150kW.

Chill Store:

The chill storage areas were designed to maintain +2°C operating temperatures with a total chill duty of 872kW.

Energy Efficiency:

The installation incorporated high-efficiency VSD compressors and pumps alongside EC fan technology throughout the evaporators to reduce energy consumption and improve operational performance.

Natural Refrigerant Strategy:

The project utilised NH₃ (ammonia) refrigeration technology to provide a future-proof, environmentally responsible cooling solution with low environmental impact.

Operational Benefits:

The completed installation delivers exceptional temperature stability, built-in redundancy, high reliability and full visibility through integrated RDM monitoring and controls.

  • Objective – Deliver a reliable, energy-efficient refrigeration solution suitable for a large-scale cold-chain distribution environment.
  • The completed project demonstrates EJM’s capability to deliver complex industrial refrigeration systems for mission-critical operations.
